After total and unflinching faith in Allah and all that emanate from Him, the next most important part of faith is embellishing oneself with a refreshing and noble character and cultivate a wholesome personality, One major' way that is clear in the Quran for achieving this is through good deeds, This issue is addressed in a format that could be further classed into Cause, Content and Reward.
CAUSE: After aqeedah (correct belief ill Allah) the 'ibaadah is the next important aspect of Islaam. All "ibaadah, from alms-giving to dhikr are not meaningless sets of rituals without cause. The acts of ibaadah reforms the character, and engenders a wholesome behaviour and ultimately earns the pleasure of Allah. The salaat of the believer, his sawm (fasting), the zakaah that he pays as well as his hajj must have the impact of reforming and perfecting his morals. In this lies the indication that he does that with sincerity and that he will ultimately earn Allah's pleasure. Thus, ibaadah is the cause of all goodness,
CONTENT: The first goodness and the foundation of all perfect character is demonstrating goodness to the Creator - Allah. No character can be perfected when this is missing for without it all other things become void:
"Who can be better in religion than one who submits his whole self to Allah, does good and follows the way of Ibrahim the true in faith?" (Q4[Nisa): 125).
Certainly no one! After being good in the sight of Allah then one must exhibit all goodness to His creation-be merciful to them and show kindness to them; these are
"those who spend (freely) whether in prosperity or in adversity; who restrain anger and pardon (all) men, for Allah loves those who do good" (Q3 [al- Imran] :134).
One character cannot be perfect by doing good only but equally by refraining from evil:
"for Allah is with those who restrain themselves those who do good; Allah commands justice, the doing of good and liberality to kith and kin and He forbids all shameful deeds and injustice and rebellion; He instructs you that you may receive admonition" (Q16[all-Nahl):90).
REWARD: Allah says!
"Is there any reward for good other than good?" (Q55[Rahmaan]:60).
The reward for perfecting one's character is surely with Allah:
"...Whoever submits his whole self to Allah is a doer of good, he will get his reward with his Lord." (Q2[Baqara]:112)
"To those who do right is a goodly (reward). Yes more (than in measure). "(Q10[Yunuus]:26)
This reward is not only reserved for the Hereafter, the Muhsiniin will also reap bountifully in this world:
"...a reward in this world and the excellent reward of the Hereafter. For Allah loves those who do good" (Q3[al-Imran): 148).
