One of the things that people treat as insignificant, although it is serious in the sight of Allaah is Isbaal. It means lengthening ones clothes below the ankle; some people even lengthen their clothes to touch the ground, while others allow them to drag on the floor behind them. In this heavily westernized society, one would indeed look strange in a pair of trousers that are halfway between the knees and ankles. The pressure is just too much, from family members, to neighbours and peers; It’s like it you against the world. Sometimes you just feel like breaking in or just getting out. Not to worry, your feeling strange is expected, what you need is perseverance and steadfastness.
The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Islam started as something strange, and it would revert to its (old position) of being strange, so good tidings for the strangers." (Muslim)
Is Isbaal really wrong? The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
"Three are those to whom Allaah would neither speak on the Day of Resurrection, nor would He look at them nor would He pardon them, and there is a painful chastisement for them. (He repeated it three times) They are: the one who wears his lower garment below the ankles; the one who reminds others of his gifts or favours; and the one who sells his product by means of lies and false oaths. "(Muslim)
It seems that the words of the best of mankind and Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) fell on a lot of deaf Muslim ears. It has reached a level that when a young Muslim brother is going for a job interview, the fact that he is not clean-shaven and his trousers are not down to his ankles means that he doesn’t look professional. We are Muslims and our only aim is to please Allaah. Allaah is the only being to fear, and his punishment is indeed severe. So how do I wear my trousers if I want to please Allaah?
AbuSaid al-Khudri (RA) narrated that the Rasul (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
"The way for a believer to wear a lower garment is to have it halfway down his legs and he is guilty of no sin if it comes halfway between that and the ankles, but what comes lower than the ankles is in Hell. On the day of Resurrection Allaah will not look at him who trails his lower garment conceitedly" (Abu Dawud)
Some might say, "I am not wearing my clothes below my ankles out of arrogance". So out of what are you wearing it, Disobedience, Fashion, Desire. The warning against isbaal is regardless of whether you do it out of arrogance or not, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
"Whatever part of the lower garment is below the ankles is in hell. " (Ahmad)
We all know, that it’s not the cloth that is in the fire, but the legs. You wouldn’t want to put your finger into burning coal would you? Yet the fire of Hell is hotter. It’s not only in the trousers Wearing any cloth below the ankle is haram, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
"Hanging down is in the lower garment, shirt and turban. If anyone trails any of them conceitedly, Allaah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection. " (Abu Dawud)
So which one are you working for? This fleeting world or the eternal one.
Be a stranger and be happy! Anyway, it’s your choice.
