A DOG IN YOUR HOME?
You must have come across the above statement with regards to dogs. What with the on slaught of Hollywood movies and their wanna-bes in our own country, its dogs and dogs all over the place. In the cars, on the sidewalk etc. and it is even becoming a status symbol. The more well groomed the dog looks the better. You need not ask how much it cost to buy one of these animals and the budget for their feeding.
Wait a minute, hope you are not trying to get one or perhaps you already have one? Come along let take a closer look at dogs and how we should relate to them. Should we keep them? Allah Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Whoever keeps a dog, one Qirat of the reward of his good deeds is deducted daily, unless the dog is used for guarding a farm or cattle: Abu Huraira (in another narration) said from the Prophet, "unless it is used for guarding sheep or farms, or for hunting." Narrated Abu Hazim from Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "A dog for guarding cattle or for hunting." (Bukhaaree)
A qirat is like the size of Mount Uhud. How many good deeds have we piled up in a day that we would gladly give one qirat away? Pray how would the dog be your best friend if it-makes you lose so much reward? Which best friend does that to his friend. They Keep Angels Away Aisha (RA) narrated that Jibril (peace be upon him) made a promise with Allahs Messenger to come at a definite hour; that hour came but he did not visit him. And there was in his hand a staff. He threw it from his hand and said: Never has Allah or His messengers (angels) ever broken their promise. Then he cast a glance (and by chance) found a puppy under his cot and said: Aisha, when did this dog enter here? She said: By Allah, I don’t know. He then commanded and it was turned out. Then Jibril (peace be upon) came and Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: You promised me and I waited for you, but you did not come; whereupon he said: It was the dog in your house which prevented me (to come), for we (angels) do not enter a house in which there is a dog or a picture. (Muslim)
The black one is a devil The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Were dogs not a species of creature I should command that they all be killed; but kill every pure black one." (Muslim, Narrated Abu Dharr: The black dog is a devil.").
How about having a devil for a friend? Please keep off the black dog. If they should lick your plates, the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Cleanse one of your containers if a dog licks it by washing it seven times, the first washing being with dirt." (Muslim). With such a friend that gives you such hard work, you sure dont need an enemy.
All praise is due to Allaah who has guided us to His Deen, what is now going to happen to those people who allow the dog not only to lick their utensils, but also their mouth and body? Maybe they need to bath seven times the first one with dirt. Before thinking that this is a dog bashing session, it is not, but just a reminder so that we do not get carried away by what is going on around us. Dogs can be used for guarding animals and for hunting and they deserve kindness from us like any creature of Allaah when they are used for the purposes that they are allowed for. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"A man saw a dog eating mud from (the severity of) thirst. So, that man took a shoe (and filled it) with water and kept on pouring the water for the dog till it quenched its thirst. So Allah approved of his deed and made him to enter Paradise." (Bukhaaree)
