PERFORMING SALAAH ON OR TOWARDS GRAVE

Jundab Ibn Abdullaah AI-Bajalee (RA) said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) - five days before his death - say:

"I have no Khaleel [beloved friend] amongst you for Allaah chose me to be His Khaleel as He had chosen Ibraaheem (peace be upon him). If I were to choose a Khaleel amongst you, I would have chosen Abu Bakr to be this Khaleel. Indeed, those before you had taken their prophets graves as places of worship. Never take the graves as places of worship, indeed I forbid you to do that. [Muslim]

Abu Hurayrah (RA) said: The Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said: May Allaah (SWT) curse Jews and the Christians; they took their prophets graves as mosques [Le. places of worship] [Bukhaaree]

Ibn Masud (RA) said: The Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said:

"Indeed, the worst of people are those who witness the last day of life, and those who take graves as places of worship. [Ahmad]

The aforementioned ahaadeeth state the following rulings: "The prohibition of taking graves containing yard as places of worship This is a unanimously agreed upon ruling which entails the obligation of destroying mosques built on graves and the detestation of performing Salaah in them. Imaam Ahmad even considered the Salaah performed in such mosques as invalid. It is also detested to perform Salaah if a place where there are graves even if there is no mosque built on them for every place on which one performs Salaah is considered as a mosque.

The Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said: "Never sit on graves nor perform Salaah towards them. [Muslim]

He also said: "Do some [of the none obligatory] Salaah at your homes and never make them similar to graves. [Bukhaaree].

Since no Salaah is to be performed on, towards or beside graves. Some scholars believe that the rationale behind the prohibition of performing Salaah in graveyards cemeteries is that they are places of impurities which render the Salaah done in them invalid. Nevertheless, the circle the prohibition encompasses more than that; doing Salaah in cemeteries potentially resembles the act of worshipping idols.

Imaam Ash - Shaafiee said: I detest that a creature [of AIlaah (SWT)] be sanctified to a degree that his tomb becomes like a mosque [to which Salaah is performed] the thing that leads people astray. The Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) stated this very rationale in his hadeeth that says:

0 AIlaah! Never make [People take} my grave as an idol that is worshipped. [Ahmad.]

He also told his Companions that the Kuffaar [disbelievers} used to build a mosque on the grave of the righteous among them and engrave pictures on it. These are the worst of AIlaah's creatures in AIlaahs sight on the Day of Resurrection. [Bukhaaree]

In the aforementioned hadeeth, the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) mentioned these two [great sins]: [taking] graves [as places of worship] and [making] pictures.
