One of the Pillars of Islam is performing the Hajj during the month of Dhul-Hijjah. The period of Hajj is however not the only period when we can perform pilgrimage to the Holy Masjid in Makkah- Masjid al-Haram or visit the Prophet's (Peace be upon Him) Masjid in Madinah.
All year round, these two Masjids are visited by Muslims all over the world to perform Umrah. One of the many wonders of Allaah that can be seen in the Masjid al-Haram is the zam zam water which flows in abundance and is readily available for drinking. The history of the zam zam water dates back to the time of Prophet Ibraheem (AS). Following Allaah's command, he left his wife Hajaar and her son Ismail in the desert of Makkah.
As her son grew thirsty, Hajaar ran between the hills of as-Safa'a and Marwa seven times in desperate search of water. Allaah in His Mercy caused a spring to spurt from the land where Ismail rubbed his heels as he cried. This spring continued flowing even after Hajaar had fed her son and drank from it. That spring which became a well still flows till today by Allaah's mercy!
The Well of zam zam is located close to the Ka'abah and pilgrims are encouraged to drink its water when they visit the Ka'bah, of the favours and miracles of Allaah are the fact that first of all, zam zam water started flowing in a desert where there is supposed to be no water. This shows that Allaah would never forsake His slaves and He would accomplish He wills.
Secondly, the well from which zam zam water flows is about 5 feet deep but it continues to supply water without running out. Imagine the number of people who drink from it day in day out; every month during and after the period of Hajj and yet it continues to flow! Masha Allaah!
A third fact is that apart from its ability to quench thirst and hunger due to its high level of Calcium and Magnesium salts, zam zam water has healing abilities. According to a scholar, "Verily, zam zam water is not only a nutrient; it is also a cure from disease."
Scientific research showed also that zam zam water is rich in fluorides which have an effective germicidal action. It has been found to help in alleviating arthritis, rheumatism and certain skin conditions. Another miracle and rahmah [mercy] of Allaah is the fact that zam zam water has not been chemically treated like ordinary drinking water yet it has no germs in it and its well has no algae or bacteria growing in it. In a city where drinking water is more expensive than fuel and people do not drink water straight out of the taps but have to buy treated water, it is indeed a favour of Allaah for the pilgrim to be able to quench his or her thirst by drinking cool zam zam water without fear of contamination or infection.
It is also wonderful to be able to fetch some of it back home knowing that it will cure by Allaah's mercy whatever ailment for which it is taken. Alhamdulilah for zam zam water! The blessed and pure nourishment which fills the stomachs of millions of Muslims who drink it; different faces; different races; all for the sake of Allaah!
