TAWHEED (ONENESS OF ALLAAH)

Parting shot between the best teacher and one of his best students Some months before the death of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), he sent one of companions to Yemen as an administrator, preacher, judge for one of its provinces.

The companions name was Muadh bin Jabal (RA); he was one of the four that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) recommended to people to learn the Quran from (Bukhari), he is the one who has most knowledge about what is lawful and what is prohibited (Tirmidhi), and when the people of knowledge will be presented before their Lord, the Mighty and Sublime, Muaadh will be one step ahead of them. (at-Tabaraanee).

Ordinarily, any advice given by the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is to be treasured bythe Muslims, but when the advice is being given to someone of the caliber of Muadh (RA), then one would benefit by paying attention and if the advice was the last that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) gave Muadh, then the content of the advice should be memorised by all.

The Prophet [peace and blessings be upon him] personally bade farewell to this mission of . guidance and light and walked for some distance alongside Muadh as he rode out of the city. Finally he said to him: "O Muadh, perhaps you shall not meet me again after this year. Perhaps when you return, you shall see only my mosque and my grave." (Silsilatu ahadeeth saheehah) Muadh [RA] wept. Those with him wept too. A feeling of sadness and desolation overtook him as he parted from his beloved Prophet, [peace and blessings of Allaah be on him]. The Prophets premonition was correct.

The eyes of Muadh [RA] never beheld the Prophet after that moment. The Prophet died before Muadh [RA} returned from the Yemen. The Advice Narrated Ibn Abbas (RA): When Allaahs Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) sent Muadh [RA] to Yemen, he said (to him), "You are going to people of a (Divine) Book., so let the first thing to which you will invite them be that none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah alone and that Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is His Messenger.

And if they obey you in that, then tell them that Allaah has enjoined on them five salah to be performed every day and night. And if they obey you in that, then tell tHem that Allaah has enjoined on them sadaqah (i.e. zakah) to be taken from the rich amongst them and given to the poor amongst them. And if they obey you in that, take Zakah from them and avoid (don't take) the best property of the people as Zakah.

And be afraid of the curse of an oppressed person because there is no screen between his invocation and AIlaah." (Bukhari) In this edition, we will just look at the first part of the advice. This is because of its importance and thats why the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) started with it. Also, if one were to look at the whole advice given to Muadh (RA), it is not something that can be treated exhaustively in a single edition.

The first thing You are going to people of a (Divine) Book, so Jet the first thing to which you will invite them be that none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah alone and that Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him} is His Messenger. And if they obey you in that" . The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) started by telling Muadh (RA) about the audience he is going to meet and these are a people who have a revealed book (even though they have distorted it).

Then he said, "let the first thing to which you will invite them be that none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah alone and that Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is His Messenger."So why did the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) made this point the first thing? In several verses of the Quran, Allaah commands us to worship Him alone, In fact, the main reason why Allaah created us is to worship Him. Allaah says, "And I (Allaah) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone}." (Q51:56)

Also, Allaah says "Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him." (Q17:23) This was the same message that was preached by all the Prophets as well. Allaah says, "And verily, We have sent among every Ummah .(community, nation) a Messenger (proclaiming): "Worship Allaah(Alone), and avoid (or keep away from) Taghut (all false deities, etc. i.e. do not worship Taghut besides Allaah). "(Q16:36) Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) "And indeed We sent Nuh to his people (and he said): "I have come to you as a plain warner. "That you worship none but Allaah, surely, I fear for you the torment of a painful Day." (Q11:25-26)

Prophet Salih (peace be upon him): "And to Thamud (people, We sent) their brother Salih. He said: "O my people! Worship Allaah, you have no other lIah (God) but Him. He brought you forth from the earth and settled you therein, then ask forgiveness of Him and turn to Him in repentance. Certainly, my Lord is Near (to all by His Knowledge), Responsive." (Q11:61) Prophet Lut (peace be upon him): The people of Lut belied the Messengers. When their brother Lut said to them: "Will you not fear Allaah and obey Him? "Verily! I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. "So fear Allaah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. (Q26:160-163)

Prophet Shuaib (peace be upon him): "And to the Midian people (We sent) their brother Shuaib. He said:- "O my people! Worship AIlaah, you have no other Ilah (God) but Him, and give not short measure or weight, I see you in prosperity; and verily I fear for you the torment of a Day encompassing. (Q11:84) And so on with all the Prophets and Messengers [peace be upon them all].

This should not come as a surprise because the prophets generally were very merciful to their communities and are always trying to guide them away from the punishment of Allaah. Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) for example did this for nine hundred and fifty years. They know that to do what opposes Tawheed is very costly.

So it is not surprising that the Prophets through the ages have been preaching the worship of Allaah alone to their people and have been warning them from associating partners with Allaah. They rnake this call thier first call then they move on to other things. "This call to taweed is the foundation and, and if there is no foundation, then upon what can we build ? And the Prophets are those who really care and feel concerned for their people guiding them to that which will benefit them and warning them from that which will harm them.

Then the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) told Muadh (RA " And If they obey you in that" meaning the other deeds will not benefit them if they did not accept and act upon this first matter. Muslims know that someone cannot pray except he has wudoo, if however he goes ahead to pray without wudoo, it will be Of no benefit.

Likewise are the acts of worship of men if they are not done for Allaah alone. While it is good to pray fast, pay zakah and go on hajj, this can only be of benefit to those who make their worship sincerely for Allaah alone. Merits of Tawheed Rights Of Allaah and His Slave Narrated Muadh ibn Jabal: While I was riding behind the Prophet of Allaah [peace and blessings be upon him] and between me and him there was only the back of the saddle, he said, "O Muadh!" I replied, "Labbaik, O Allaah's Messenger," he said, "Do you know what is Allaahs right upon his slave?" I said, "Allaah and His Prophet know best." He said, "Allaah's right upon his slaves is that they should worship Him alone and not worship anything else besides Him."

Then he proceeded for a while and then said, "O Muadh bin Jabal!" I replied "Labbaik, O Allah's Messenger Sadaik! He said, "Do you know what the right of the slaves upon Allaah if they do that?" I replied "Allaah and His Apostle know best" He said "The right of the slaves upon Allah is that He Will not punish them (If they do that). "[Bukhaari] Preservation of life and Wealth in this World The messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, He who testifies that there is no deity but Allaah and makes a denial of whatever is worshipped other than Allaah , his property and blood have become inviolable and his account will be with Allaah (Muslim)

Continuation of life on earth The Messenger of Allaah( peace and blessings 0f Allaah be upon him) said, The Hour would not come so long as Allaah is worshipped In the world" (Muslim.) Protection from the fire of Hell in the Hereafter The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, "He who testifies that there is no deity worthy of worship but Allaah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allaah, Allaah would prohibit the fire of Hell for him. (Muslim)

Narrated Abu Dharr (RA). The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said "Nobody says: None has the right to be worshipped but Allaah and then later on he dies while believing in that, except that he will enter Paradise." Isaid, "Even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft?" He said, "Even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft" I said, "Even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft?" He said, "Even if he had committed illegal sexualintercourse and theft." I said, "Even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft?" He said, "Even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and theft, in spite of Abu Dharrs dislikeness". (Bukhari)

Dangers to Tawheed

Due to its importance, it is only natural that tawheed should be guarded well. While worshipping an idol believing in other deities, or believing in the concept of trinity or multiple gods are obvious violations. There are others dangers that are not as obvious but equally dangerous to our tawheed which we should guard against. Some of them are: Wearing rings and strings as good omen: Il-e Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) saw a man wearing a bracelet of brass in his band.

There upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to him , What is this bracelet ? The man replied , It is because of al-Waahinah (a vein that causes pain in the shoulder and the hand) .Thereupon, the prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said,` Take it off, for it will not increase but your pain.

If you die while wearing it, you will never gain salvation" (Ahmad) Wearing amulets: The Messenger Of A1laah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, "Using (illegal incantations, amulets, and tiwalah (a kind of magic used to make a woman love her husband) is an act of disbelief. " (Abu Dawud) Seeking blessings from trees, stones etc.

Abu Waaqid al-Laythi (RA) narrated: "We went along with the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) before (the battle of) Hunayn. At that time, we were new to Islam. We passed by a lote tree belonging to the polytheists who were intent in devotion to it and they used to hang their arms on it. We said, 0 Messenger of Allaah! Make a tree for us Dhat al- Anwat.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, Allaah is the Greatest (You have followed the evil) traditions (of previous nations.) By the one in Whose Hand my life is, you have said the same as the Children of Israel said to Moosaa, "... make for us a god just as they have gods. He said, Indeed, you are people behaving ignorantly ... (Q7:138) You will follow the traditions of those (nations) before you" (Tirmidhi)

Divination The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "If anyone visits a soothsayer and believes in what he says, then he has disbelived in what was revealed to Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). (Abu Dawud) . He also said, "He who vIsits a soothsayer and ask him about anything, his prayers extending to forty days will not be accepted. (Muslim)

Evil omens

This is the practice of seeing evil omens in certain birds, places, people etc. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, "If anyone stops doing something because of (believing in) evil omen, then he has committed an act of disbelief. They said, 0 Messenger of AIIaah! What is the expiation for that? He (the Prophet) said, "The expiation for that is to say, O AIlaah! There is no good but Yours, and no omen but comes from You, and there is no deity but You (Ahmad)

Sorcery & Magic

Allaah says, "But they (the children of Israel) certainly knew that whoever purchased it (magic) would not have in the hereafter any share." (Q2:102) The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, "The prescribed punishment of a sorcerer is a stroke with the sword." (Tirmidhi)

Astrology

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If anyone acquires any knowledge of astrology, he acquires a branch of magic of which he gets more as long as he continues to do so." (Abu Dawud).

Parting Shot Perhaps one is carried away by the various merits of tawheed and feels relaxed that once he has, then he can do whatever he likes apart from what constitute shirk [associating partners with Allaah], let it be known what it means by entering paradise is that eventually the person will enter paradise, if Allaah wishes he may forgive the lesser sins and if he wishes He may not forgive.

So those who fear AIIaah's punishment would stay away from those other sins that are less than shirk to the best of their ability. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) also encouraged the people to continue doing good and in one of his advice to Muadh (RA) at another time he said, "O Muadh! Do you know what AIlaahs right on His slave is, and what the right of His slaves on Him is?" I replied, "Allaah and His Messenger know better.

He said, "AIlaahs right on His slaves is that they should worship Him (Alone) and should not worship any besides Him. And slaves right on Allaah is that He should not punish him who worships none besides Him." I said, "O Allaah;s Messenger! Should I not inform the people of this good news?" He said, "Do not inform them of it, lest they should depend on it (absolutely). "(Bukhari)
