Gradually the month of Ramadan is coming to an end . We surely are going to miss it especially with all the rewards that Allaah has placed in it. However, while it is true that this month is full of rewards and blessings not matched by any ,the prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has informed us that there are some other fasts that we can observe that can give us enormous rewards. Let us look at some of them; Six days of Shawwal.
Abu Ayyub ai-Ansari reported that the Prophet [peace and blessings be upon him] said: "Whoever fasts during the month of Ramadan and then follows it with six days of Shawwal will be [rewarded] as if he had fasted perpetually." [Muslim]
According to Ahmad [RA], one may fast on these days consecutively or non-consecutively, as neither practice is preferred over the other. We must note however, that we can only commence the fasting of the six days of Shawwal after we must have completed the days missed in the month of Ramadan due to illness or traveling etc.
Mondays and Thursdays It is recorded in Sahih Muslim that the Prophet [peace and blessings be upon him], when asked about fasting on Monday, said: "That is the day on which I was born and the day on which I received revelations. Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet [peace and blessings be upon him] was asked fasting on Monday and Thursday and he said: "The actions [of the son of Aadam] are presented on every Monday and Thursday. Allaah forgives every Muslim or every believer, except for those who are boycotting each other. He says [about them]: Leave them." [Ahmad]. Three days of every month. Abu Dharr al-ghafari reported: The messenger of Allaah [peace and blessings be upon him] ordered us to fast for three days of every month-that is ,on the days of the full moon [the 13th ,14th, 15th of the lunar month]. And he said : "It is like fasting the whole year.[an-Nisaai] Ashura and the day of Arafah.
The Prophet [peace and blessings be upon him] said; "seek from Allaah that fasting on the day of Arafah may atone for the sins of the preceding and the coming years, and I seek from Allah that fasting on the day of Ashura may atone for the sins of the preceding year. [Muslim] Aisha [RA] said, "The Messenger of Allaah, [peace and blessings be upon him] used to fast for so long that we thought he would never stop fasting, and he would go without fasting for so long that we thought he would never fast again. I never saw the Messenger of AIIaah, may Allaah bless him and grant him peace, fast for a complete month except for Ramadan, and I never saw him do more fasting in anyone month than he did in Shaban. [Muwatta]
First Nine Days of Dhul-Hijjah: Hunaydah ibn Khalid narrated from his wife on the authority of one of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who said: The Prophet of Allaah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to fast the first nine days of Dhul-Hiliah ... (Abu Dawood)
