We continue this month the discussion we started about Tawheed al-Asmaa was-Sifaat, which is to single out Allaah with His most beautiful Names and Most Exalted Attributes mentioned in the Qur'aan and Sunnah, and to have absolute faith in their meaning and their rulings.
The correct understanding.
No similarity and analogy should be made regarding the attributes of Allaah, the Mighty and Magnificent.
The belief in these beautiful names means that we take to them as they are in their literal sense.
Without tahreef - which is to turn the Names and Attributes away from what is correct and intended
Without ta'teel - which is to negate and deny some or all of the Names and Attributes and to strip Allaah of them;
Without takyeef - which is to declare that the Names and Attributes of Allaah are upon a particular reality without having to specify the resemblance and
Without tamtheel - which is the belief that the Names and Attributes resembles the attributes found within the creation.
So, we do not say, He does not have two hands, a face, hearing, sight, life, capability nor did He ascend above His throne: Nor do we say, He has two hands like that of His creation, a Face like theirs and so on. Rather, we say, He has these Names and Attributes as it befits His Majesty. Allaah says:
"There is nothing like Him and He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer." '(Asshura : 11)
His Names and Attributes are perfect.
The attributes of Allaah, the Most High, are absolute in perfection, containing no deficiency in any sense at all. This is to say that they reach the highest limits of beauty. Allaah says:
"Call upon Allaah or call upon the Most Gracious, by whatever Name you call Him it is the same, for to Him belong the Best and Most Beautiful Names. "(AI-Israa'eel : 110)
These Names do not possess any defect at all. An example of this is the name al-Hayy which means the Ever- Living. It is a Name that demonstrates Perfect life, which was not preceded by absence, nor is it followed up by a death. Allaah says:
"And put your trust in the Ever Living One who dies not..." (Furqaan : 58)
Such life necessitates perfection for the Attributes such as Knowledge ('ilm), Capability (qudrah), Hearing (sama', sight (basr) and other than them.
Another example is that al-'Aleem is a Name from the Names of Allaah demonstrating perfect knowledge which is not preceded by ignorance, nor is it followed up by forgetfulness. Allaah says: \
"Knowledge of it is with my Lord, in a Book. My Lord is not unaware, nor does He forget." (Taa Haa : 52)
They are innumerable.
The names and attributes of Allaah, the Mighty and Magnificent are soo many that all of them cannot be listed. Some of them Allaah has retained with Himself in the knowledge of the Unseen. Thus, besides the Names of Allaah that are found in the Qur'aan and the Sunnah, there are numerous other names that are not known to us. The evidence of this is that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessing be upon him) used to pray in times of worry and grief saying:
"... O Allaah! I ask you by every Name with which You have named Yourself with in Your Book, taught anyone of your creation or kept unto Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen that is with You... "(Ahmad)
Paradise for ninety-nine.
Of these numerous Names, whoever memorizes, believes in and acts upon ninety-nine of themt will insha Allaah be amongst the inheritors of Paradise. Narrated Abu Huraira: Allaah's Messenger (peace and blessing be upon him) said:
"Allaah has ninety-nine Names, one-hundred less one; and he who memorized them all by heart will enter Paradise." (Bukhari)
And why would you not memorize Allaah's. Names when you should call upon Him by them. "
And your Lord said: "'Call upon Me, (and ask Me for anything) I will respond to your invocation. Verily! Those who scorn my worship [i.e. do not invoke me, and do not believe in My Oneness, they will surely enter Hell in humiliation!" (Ghaafir : 60)
