The first aspect of Jaahiliyyah that we shall look into is shirk, associating partners with Allaah in worship The people of Jaahiliyyah worshipped Allaah by worshipping other Allaah (mostly righteous people) along with Him. Why did they do that ? They did that desiring that these (righteous people) act as intercessors for them before Allaah. This is based on their notion that Allaah loved this and that these people loved Him. Allaah says: "And they worship besides Allaah things that harm them not nor profit them, and they say: These are our intercessors with Allaah. " (Q10:18)
And He says: "And those who take associates apart from Him, (they say): We worship them only so that the may bring us nearer to Allaah."(Q39:3) Shirk was the greatest matter that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessing be upon him) opposed them in. So he brought sincerity (i.e. doing deeds sincerely for Allaah alone and not for anyone else) and informed that it was the Religion of Allaah, which all the Messengers were sent with. And he informed us that no deeds are (by Allaah), except those done Sincerely (for Him alone).
And he informed that whosoever does what these (polytheists) approved of, then Allaah has forbidden Paradise for him and his final destination will be the Hellfire. For this reason, mankind becomes divided into Muslims and disbelievers. And it is due to it that enmity (between the two) occurs. And it is for this purpose that Jihaad was legislated, as Allaah says: "And fight them (disbelievers) until there is no more fitnah (evil/disbelief) left, and the religion is for Allaah alone." (Q7:39)
Shirk is a sin that Allaah will never forgive if a person should die in it ,without repentance. Allaah says: "Verily, Allaah forgives not that partners should be set up with him in worship , but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He pleases, and whoever sets up partners with Allaah in worship , he has indeed invented a tremendous sin." (4:48) Today many Muslims still commit this gravest sin without realizing it.
Some go to Muslim grave yard to supplicate to those they consider saints with the hope of interceding on their behalf with Allaah. This is nothing but a repeat with Allah of the excuse given by the mushrikun (idol worshippers) for worshipping other than Allaah as quoted above. This practice of calling on the saints has become rampant among some Muslims nowadays to the point that if something bad should happen to such a Muslim he will call on his shaykh instead Allaah by saying "Yaa shaykh!" (0 Shaykh!). This is a statement of shirk. One should never call on any being other than Allaah.
Allaah says: "And invoke not besides Allaah, any that will neither profit you, nor hurt you ,but if (in case) You did so, you shall certainly be one of the Zalimuun (polytheists and wrong-doers)." (Q10:106). O Muslim, submit to Allaah alone and run away from this sin that destroys all good deeds. Allaah says: "And indeed it has been revealed to you (O Muhammad as it was to those (Allaah's Messengers) before you: If you join others in worship with Allaah, (then) surely (all) your deeds will be in vain, and you will certainly be among the losers."(Q39:65)
