Part of the belief of the Ahlus Sunnah waf Jamaah as transmitted by the Companions (RA) and those who came after them is that, as Muslims we hope that Allaah will forgive the righteous amongst the Muslims and will enter them into al-Jannah (Paradise) out of His Mercy. Yet we do not testify that they will definitely enter Paradise. We also seek forgiveness for those who wrong themselves amongst the believers. We fear for them but we do not despair of the mercy of Allaah on them either.

The Hope of the Righteous

The Muslim who sincerely keeps his duties to Allaah and obeys the commandment of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of be upon him) is to hope in the Mercy of Allaah to earn forgiveness and al-Jannah. Allaah says:

"Verily, those who have believed, and those who have emigrated (for AIlaahs Religion) and have striven hard in the Way of AIlaah, all these hope for AIlaahs Mercy. And AIlaah is Oft - Forgiving, Most -Merciful."(Q 2:218).

He also says:

"Those whom they call upon [like Eesa son of Maryam, Uzair, angel] desire (for themselves) means of access to their Lord (AIlaah),as to which of them should be the nearest and they [Eesa, Uzair, angels etc.] hope for His Mercy and fear His Torment. Verily, the Torment of your Lord is something to be afraid of!" (Q 17:57).

The similitude of the hope of those who keep the rights of Allaah and His Messenger is the hope a man has of having a child and so, he cohabits with his wife. Or the hope of the one who intends to be a scholar and learns, reads, traveling in pursuit of scholarship. This hope carries along the love of the one hoping for what he hopes to get, his fear of losing what he hopes to get (for any undoing, known or unknown) and lots of efforts towards achieving what he hopes to get. This is the situation of those who truly believe in Allaah and His Messenger hoping to meet His favour on the Day of Judgment. AI-Imaam Hasan al-Basaree (RA) said, "Act. By Allaah, on Righteousness.

Make efforts to keep it up and fear that it (your deeds) is rejected, the believer puts together righteous acts and fear but the hypocrite puts together doing evil and hope." The Fear of the Wrong Doer on the other hand, we pray Allaah to forgive the Muslims who is not careful care less about keeping the stated limits of Allaah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). We believe that he can forgive all sins except Shirk, that the doer dies upon. He says:

"Verily! AIlaah forgives not (the sin of) setting up partners in worship with Him, but He forgives whom he pleases sins other than that, and whoever sets up partners in worship with AIlaah, has indeed strayed far away."( Q4: 116).

So we fear His Decision Glory be to Him - to punish the erring. He says:

"Verily, His Seizure is Painful (and) Severe." (Q 11:102).
