The fear of shirk is the first step towards maintaining a pure and firm faith. This is because AIIah forgives not that partners should be set up with him; but He forgives anything else to whom He pleases; to set up partners with Allah is to devise a sin most heinous indeed:' (Q4[Nisaa]:48).
Thus the Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) taught us to pray against this heinous sin:
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika an ushrika bika wa ana o'lamu, wa astaghfiruka lima la a'lamu. [0 Allah, I seek refuge in You lest I associate anything with You knowingly, and I seek refuge with You from what I know not] (Ahmad) .
Seek to further set yourfaith aright with the following prayers:
"Allaumma aslihlii dinnii ladhii huwa 'asmatu amri! wa aslihlii dun'yaya latii fiihaa ma'aashii wa aslihli aakhirati latii fiihaa ma'aadii. Wa aj'ali al-hayaata iyaadatal-Iii fii kulli khayri wa aj'ali-I maut raahatat-lii Min kulli sharri," [0 Allah, set aright my faith which is the safeguard of my affairs. Set aright my world wherein is my living. Set aright my Hereafter whereto shall be my return. Let life be unto me' (a source of) increase in every righteousness, and let death be unto me (a means of) relief, from every evil.] (Muslim)
"Allahumma inni as'aluka al-hudaa wat-tuqa wal afaafa wal-ghina" [0 Allah, behold, I beg of You right guidance, righteousness, piety, and freedom from want] (Muslim)
AIIahumma ahdinii wa saddidnii" [0 Allah, guide me aright and make- me straightforward] (MUSLIM)
