Door of mercy: Eating

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us guidance as far as eating is concerned. He taught us what to say and do before, during and after our meals. Let us see the some of the things that he has taught us.

Mention the name of Allaah.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed us to say Bismillah (In the name of Allaah) before we start eating. Sometimes, we may forget to say it before we begin to eat. In this case, when we remember we should say:

Bismillahi fii awwalihi wa aakhirihiMeaning: "In the name of Allaah, in the beginning and in the end" (Ibn Majah)

A Protection against Shaytan,

When a person mentions the name of Allaah before he starts to eat his food the Shaytan runs away and will not eat along with him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said;

when a person mentions the name of Allaah upon entering his house and while eating the food, Shaytan says (addressing himself): You have no place to spend the night and no meal for you"(Muslim)

Thank Allaah

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said we should say this word of appreciation to Allaah for providing us with food and drink:

 Allahumma baarik lana fihi wa at 'imna minhu" Meaning:"Oh Allaah bless us in it and provide us with something better than it" (Tirmidhi)

For Drink.

"Allahumma baarik lana fihi wa zidna minhu"  Meaning:  "Oh Allaah, bless us in it and give us more of it  (Tirmidhi)

Don't Give The Shaytan.

It is preferred that we lick our fingers and pick up whatever falls out of our food while eating.
