Sometimes what you eat is your choice. As you look into the food cabinet or refrigerator, ask yourself some questions, what, is in this food? How can that food help keep me healthy? How is this food more healthful than that one?

By answering questions like these, you get some of the information you need to make a healthful food choice. You can think about how eating each food might change your body.

Some people have cookies, candy and sweetened soft drinks as snacks, those foods have large amounts of sugar or fats and few other nutrients. Added sugar can cause tooth decay, eating high-fat and high-sugar snacks as a habit can cause a person to gain more weight than needed.

The extra weight can make many organs, such as your heart and pancrease work harder than they should. The pancrease is a body organ that makes digestive juices that help break down proteins, fats and carbohydrates.

A piece of fruit or a bowl of sliced vegetables is healthful, tasty snack. It has many of the nutrients you need to stay healthy. It also costs little money, considering all the nutrients it contains.

Some candy and soft drinks have caffeine in them. Caffeine is a natural chemical found in chocolate, coffee, tea and most cola drinks. Too much caffeine in the diet can make people jittery. It can keep people awake when they need fall asleep. It can cause a stomachache or a burning feeling in the stomach. Milk, water and fruit juice are more healthful drinks than coffee, tea or cola drinks.

After choosing a healthful snack, enjoy it but also think about how you made your food choice. You can be proud of yourself for the way you made your food choice. Making wise food choices shows that you are a responsible person.
