One of the best voluntary good deeds that Muslims can do is giving in charity. The Prophet [peace and blessings be upon him] encouraged us to do this and he himself demonstrated this. Let us see some of the benefits in it.
Your true property
Narrated Abdullah ibn ash-Shikhkhir, I came to Allaah's Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as he was reciting:
He said: The son of Adam claims: My wealth, my wealth. And he (the Prophet) said:
O, son of Adam, is there anything as your belonging except that which you consumed, which you utilised, or which you wore and then it was worn out or you gave as charity and sent it forward? [Muslim]
Multiple Rewards From Allaah
Prophet [peace and blessings be upon him] said,:
"If one give in charity what equals one date fruit from the honestly earned money and Allaah accepts only the honestly earned money, Allaah takes it in His right (hand) and then enlarges its reward for that person (who has given it), as anyone of you brings up his baby horse, so much so that it becomes as big as a mountain. And so, any (each one) of you should save himself from the fire even by giving half of a date-fruit (in charity) and if you do not find a half date-fruit, then (you can do it through saying) a good pleasant word (to your brethren). [Bukhari]
A Shield Against Hell
Narrated Adi bin Hatim heard the Prophet [peace and blessings be upon him] saying:
"Save yourself from Hell-fire even by giving half a date-fruit in charity." [Bukhari]
The Best Charity
Narrated Abu Huraira: A man came to the Prophet [peace and blessings be upon him] and asked, "O Allaah's Prophet [peace and blessings be upon him]! Which charity is the most superior in reward?" He replied,
"The charity which you practice while you are healthy, niggardly and afraid of poverty and wish to become wealthy. Do not delay it to the time of approaching death and then say give so much to such and such, and so much to such and such. And it has already belonged to such and such (as it is too late)." [Bukhari]
For Every Muslim
Narrated Abu Burda from his father from his grandfather that the Prophet [peace and blessings be upon him] said:
"Every Muslim has to give in charity."
The people asked, "O Allaah's Prophet [peace and blessings be upon him]! If someone has nothing to give, what will he do?"
"He should work with his hands and benefit himself and also give in charity (from what he earns)."
The people further asked, "If he cannot find even that?" He replied, "He should help the needy who appeal for help." Then the people asked, "If he cannot do that?"
"Then he should perform good deeds and keep away from evil deeds and this will be regarded as charitable deeds." [Bukhari]
Every bone of the body
Allaah's Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
In the morning charity is due from every bone in the body of every one of you. Every utterance of Subhanallah is an act of charity. Every utterance Alhamdulillah is an act of charity, every utterance of Laillaha illlallah is an act of charity, every utterance of Allaahu Akbar is an act of charity, enjoining good is an act of Charity, forbidding what is disreputable is an act of charity, and two rakahs which one prays in the forenoon will suffice.
