What is a team?
A team is a group of people working together for a common set out goal. Team building is a way of getting people to work with one another as a harmonious unit. In order to be able to do this, there is need for us to have good leadership. This is even more important for us as Muslims. Allaah says;
"Help you one another in AI-Birr and Taqwa [virtue, righteousness and piety]; but do not help one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allaah. Verily, Allaah is severe in punishment." [Q 5: 2]
It is the responsibility of the leader to coordinate and make sure that the team works in harmony. Without this, the set out goal cannot be achieved. A team is not just a collection of individuals with separate aims and objectives, but a group of people who work together on a continuing mission with goals and objectives. The leader of the team must recognise the potential and skills of the individuals in the group and assign to them the task that best fits him.
While each team member contributes particular skills and knowledge, the team as a whole, as well as each member, is responsible for the task on which it is trying to achieve. The similitude is like any team game that we play; basketball, soccer, handball etc. It is the responsibility of the leader or trainer to first identify the potential that each individual in the team has and also ensure that they work for the success of the team in general and not for individual objective.
How Do Teams Function Effectively?
Teams can function effectively or succeed when we adhere to certain rules; for example:
1.Team members should not undermine or criticize one another publicly, even if they do not like one another, or disagree on issues and opinions. The disagreement should be resolved in-house.
2. A team member with a certain duty or responsibility in a given area should determine and is expected to make the final decision.
3. Conversely, a member does not make decisions with regard to matters which he does not have primary responsibility.
4. A team should have good communication links among its members; formal or informal.
5. Whatever conclusion that a particular team ember arrives at should be tabled before the overall leader of the team for his final approval
