Gratitude Leads to Happiness

Praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. May the peace and blessings of Allaah be upon Muhammad. His last Messenger, his household, his companions and all those who follow him till the Last Day. Have You Thanked Allaah Enough? The key to true and lasting happiness in this world and the next is full submission to the will of Allaah; sabr [patience] and shukr [gratitude and thankfulness] are the ridges that make the key function. Not thanking Allaah .or not expressing enough gratitude to Him may be the cause of your unhappiness.

Allaah says; "And (remember) when your Lord proclaimed: If you give thanks (by accepting Faith and worshipping none but All), I will give you more (of My Blessings), but if you are thankless (i.e. disbelievers). verily! My Punishment is indeed severe." (Q14 [Ibrahim]:7).

So, before you look elsewhere for the reasons of your unhappiness, ask yourself if you have thanked Allaah enough! At all times, in all conditions, we must thank Allaah; His favours upon us are too immense and gratitude is the least form of our appreciation so that we may receive much more from Him.

Salman al-Faaris (RA) said: "There was a man who was given many of the luxuries of this world, and then they were taken way from him. But he continued to praise and thank Allaah until everything had been taken from him, even his bed. And then he still praised and thanked Allaah. Another man, who had also been given many of the luxuries of this world asked him: "what are you praising and thanking Allaah for?" The man said, "I am praising and thanking Him for blessings which, if others asked me to give them to them in return for all that they have, I would never give them up." What can they be? "asked the second man", "can't you see?" asked the first man. I have my eyesight, my tongue, my hands, my feet ... Gratitude with our heart and limbs.

A man said to Abu Hazim: What is the gratitude of the eyes? He said, "if you see good things, you speak about them, and if you see bad things, you keep quiet about it." He asked, what is the gratitude of the ears? He said, "if you hear something good, you accept it, and if you hear something bad, you reject it." Then he asked, "what is the gratitude of the hands?" He said, "do not take that which does not belong to you, and do not hold back from paying the dues of Allaah (zakaah)." Then he asked, "what is the gratitude of the head?" He said: "To hive-knowledge in it." Then he asked, "what is the gratitude of one's private parts?" He quoted: "Who guard their private parts except from those joined to them in the marriage bond, or (the captives) whom their right hands possess for (in their case) they are free from blame, but those whose desires exceed those limits are transgressors." (Q23[al-Muminun]:5-7).

Ibn Abid-Dunya mentioned that Prophet Dawud (alayhis sallam) asked Allaah: "What is the least of Your blessings?" Allaah revealed to him: "O Dawud, take a breath." Dawud (alayhi salaam) did so, and Allaah told him: "This is the least of My blessings on you." Is there any other way to repay this blessing except to express gratitude at all times and in all ways? Would you not then be grateful and then attain happiness here and in the hereafter? Fa hal antum shaakiroon?
